Online Fashion Degrees: How Do They Work?
Google the term “online fashion degree” and you will get a listing of 13,500,000 results; is this good or bad?
Online education can be a crapshoot sometimes, and it’s especially tricky when you’re dealing with an education in something as hands on as fashion. Sure, the draw of being able to sit in your pj’s and do your work when you want to is appealing, but in the end, will your degree be worth the paper it’s written on?
According to an article written by Associated Content, online fashion degrees are a great alternative to the standard fashion school experience. You will still get to interact with your fellow students and your teachers and tests will often still be monitored so there is little chance to cheat. You will have more flexibility with your schedule which will enable you to study around your work hours, as well as any family commitments you may have.
Speaking of jobs, it is a good idea to get a job in the fashion industry while you are working on an online fashion degree. Here’s why: it will give you the hands on experience you need to secure a job after you are done with school. In many ways, this will be similar to an internship experience, except it will be at a much lower level, and you’ll get paid to do it.
While some in the fashion industry may question the validity of a certificate from an online fashion school, many schools that have physical campuses offer online courses for the alternative student. The important thing to remember is that if you are going to choose an online program, choose wisely. Avoid choosing a program that is not well known and be sure that it is properly accredited. Nothing would be worse than spending the time and money to get the degree, only to have it be worthless.
Another thing to consider while looking at online fashion schools is whether or not they offer job placement assistance. This is a big draw for many people, especially if they are worried about finding a job with an online degree. Many schools have information regarding how many students they’ve placed over the last “X” amount of years; be sure to check this figure, especially if they give you a percentage. If they say, “99% of our graduates are offered placement,” that’s great! But, it takes on a whole new meaning when you find out that only equates to a handful of students.
Overall, an online degree in the fashion industry is not a bad idea. Just like everything else that transpires on the internet though, you must be careful about who you conduct business with. As long as you thoroughly investigate who you are getting involved with, your online fashion degree could be just a few clicks away!
