Fashion Marketing: Blogging and Fashion, Can You Have One Without The Other?

Fashion Marketing News: These days, it seems that everyone has a blog. Some have them just to give their thoughts to the world; others have them to promote something. Statistically, only a handful of individuals read a person’s blog, so how is it that some people get thousands of readers? And, as a marketer in the fashion industry, how can you have a blog that is successful, while promoting what you’re selling, but not seem to salesy?
It’s a tall order, but Fashion-Fox.com has rounded up some great examples of highly successful fashion blogs that fit the bill.
A Top 50 list was created over at fashioniq, and we feel it’s pretty accurate. Here, we’ll give you the Top 5 and discuss what makes them so successful.
StyleDash :: This blog covers the gamut of material from fashion to celebs to events to cosmetics. If you are looking for a one-stop read for nearly everything fashion related, this is the place to go. Although the blog does not have much of a story line to it, and it’s not remarkable in its tone, it is full of useful information. This blog has a lot of advertisers that support it, for good reason; however, the blog itself does not promote any one product.
Go Fug Yourself :: Fugly is the New Pretty. This blog is highly popular and it’s so successful for one major reason; it takes pride in being snarky about the celebrity sect, their stylists, and in general, their lives. Mostly about what they’re wearing though, this is so highly entertaining and laugh-out-loud that it’s no wonder that this site has an average traffic rank of 15,000 hits per day. Not salesy, it simply takes the celebrities it knows and loves and points out the fashion faux-pas that they’ve made.
YBF :: Young, Black, and Fabulous. A blog that covers the fashion of, and what is fabulous in, black America. It includes entertainers, trends, music, and gossip from a young, black, and fabulous perspective. According to Alexa, the site sees around 40,000 users a day and it caters to a very specific group, which is what makes it so successful. It has found a niche, and while it takes a little acclimation to the lingo, the blog has a little “YBF Dictionary” which is quite funny.
The Purse Blog :: Shallow Obsessing Strongly Encouraged. To me, this blog is nearly perfect. Although it does not have as many hits per day as the others, it delicately balances the world of purses and advertising. It doesn’t take but a mili-second to load and the categories are organized beautifully. The person that loves handbags can find whatever they need with no problem. Advertising is demur and low-key so that the user is aware of it, but not overwhelmed by it.
The Budget Fashionista :: Be Fabulous for Less. Really, the name says it all. Who doesn’t like the thought of being fabulously dressed for less money? The basis of the blog is finding fashion bargains and sharing them with the rest of us. With a three-month average of over 76,000 visits per day, it’s obvious that many, many people enjoy this blog. Advertisers support the site, but not in an intrusive way and the author does a great job of linking to the websites of the products that she talks about. Again, not selling anything, but letting people know where to find the goods.
So, what do these 5 popular fashion blogs have in common? They all discuss fashion without selling anything. They all earn money based on the advertisers that support their sites, and the affiliate programs that they belong too. And while some of them have their own products that they sell, such as The Budget Fashionista’s book, they do not push the product. Instead, they have established a repertoire with their readers and taken the stand that, if their readers want to buy from them, they will do so in their own time.
